By Melanie Schell The kaleidoscope is a simple yet visually stunning centerpiece for a dining table or mantel. The object of the kaleidoscope is a transparent material with a geometric pattern. As the pattern is rotated by the viewer, the pattern changes and new images can be seen.
To make the kaleidoscope, you will need two parts: a transparent plastic cylinder and some colored glass or plastic beads.
Cylinder
A child-safe vinyl cylinder from the toy store or a water pipe or hair roller cylinder from a beauty supply store.
Colored Glass or Plastic Beads
I used a glass or plastic beading kit that I had from years ago, but any colored glass or plastic beads will do.
In addition to these two parts, you will need two things:
A pattern to cut out and print.
A piece of sandpaper.
Printing the Pattern
I found my pattern online at a company called Mitten-Interactive.com. In addition to the kaleidoscope pattern, they offer a lot of other geometric patterns to use as borders for holiday cards, gift tags, etc.
After downloading the pattern, print it out on card stock. I found that regular old printer paper worked best.
Cutting the Pattern
Place the pattern on the sandpaper and carefully cut it out.
Cutting Out the Center
Once you've cut out the outer circle, carefully cut out the center circle. You will have to find the center point in the center by looking at the image on the card stock. If you need to make a small mark to show the center point, do so now.
Sanding the Center
Sand the center until it is smooth and shiny. This part is a little tricky. If the sanding disc is too big or too small, the sanded effect will not be uniform. I found that using a brush and sandpaper from the hardware store worked best. If you try to sand directly on the plastic, it will end up looking flat and not shiny.
